Vic: Call to increase class sizes
A senior educator says Victorian high schools should consider lecture-style classesof up to 100 students for year 12.
Victorian Association of State Secondary Principals president ANDREW BLAIR says classesfor the VCE -- Victoria's final high school exams -- could be combined into one university-stylelarge class.
Teachers could deliver lectures on particular subjects before dividing the class intosmall tutorial groups.
The call comes as Australian Education Union leaders meet in Melbourne to discussrecent government pay offers, the teacher shortage and class sizes.
Mr BLAIR says the assumption that class sizes of around 25 are best needs more discussion.
He says his proposal could also help students become more autonomous and better preparethem for university.
But Education Minister LYNNE KOSKY says the Bracks government has spent millions ofdollars in lowering class sizes and it isn't about to change direction.
