NSW: Police announce Easter roads crackdown
New South Wales police say drivers who commit the so-called fatal four on the state's
roads this Easter will lose double demerit points and face hefty fines.
Operation Tortoise will use maximum police resources to crack down on the four - speeding,
drink driving, failure to wear seatbelts and driving when tired.
Inspector DAVE EVANS says police will be out in force in an attempt to reduce deaths
and trauma on the state's roads this long weekend.
He says police will use new cordless, handheld laser speed detection guns, which are
more user-friendly and mobile than current models.
Drivers caught speeding face maximum fines of $1,400 and loss of their license for three months.
Failing to wear a seatbelt will cost motorists $114 and the loss of six points, while
drink driving incurs the automatic loss of license and up to two years' jail.
