NSW; New laws to be introduced for school offences- Govt
School intruders who assault students or teachers could spend up to 12 years behindbars under legislation proposed by the New South Wales Government.
Education Minister JOHN WATKINS and Police Minister MICHAEL COSTA today jointly announcedthree new offences and increased penalties for two others.
The offences relate specifically to criminal conduct on school property and would attractharsher penalties than similar offences committed outside school grounds.
Under the proposed laws, a person who enters school property intending to threatenstaff or students -- or does threaten or harass them -- could face a maximum five yearsimprisonment.
The same maximum five-year penalty would apply to a person who harrasses or assaultsa student or teacher leaving or entering the school.
A person who asssaults or harrasses students or staff on school property causing bodilyharm could face seven year's jail.
Anyone who wounds or inflicts grievous bodily harm on a student or teacher on schoolgrounds would face a maximum penalty of 12 years jail.
